This wild tray features a selection of flowering cacti under the genera of Echinocereus, Rebutia, and the archaic Lobivia (now under the genus Echinopsis.) All these cacti share the characteristic of similar bright, red flowers, from cacti in a plethora of shapes and sizes. "Echinocereus" means "hedgehog candle" in latin, aptly describing the inherent spines, cylindrical shapes, and flower "flame."

"Echinocereus coccineus," a dicot, is a shrub (stem succulent) that is native to California. Echinocereus coccineus is a variant of the more widespread, generally larger but otherwise very similar echinocereus triglochidiatus, characterized by sprawling clusters, bright red/orange flowers with green stigma and rounded petals, low to medium spine cover and somewhat flabby stems. Clumps may have over 100 members, each up to 10 inches in length, and cover an area of several square feet. Echinocereus viridiflorus has several differences from most other hedgehog species; it is very frost tolerant, grows much further north, and has smaller flowers which appear along the stem rather than near the tip.

In the potichomania process, the glass acts as both a foundation and protective finish, saving the step of varnishing. The original intent was to recreate Greek and Etruscan vases by simulating rare and expensive Sevrés porcelain.

This tray measures approximately 6x10 inches. The relative thinness of the tray – just over 1/8” thick – belies the complexity of the potichomania process. Each of our trays is comprised of a glass tray, three layers of 28# paper, four coatings of varnish, and finished with two coats, each of paint and clear acrylic spray. We’ve added a high-quality felt pad on the bottom in order to protect your home surfaces.

Care: Please spray with a gentle glass cleanser and wipe clean. Do not submerge in water. For decorative purposes only.
