Chicago Theatre
The Chicago Theatre, originally opened on October 26, 1921, as the flagship of the Balaban & Katz theater chain. Billed at its opening as the "Wonder Theatre of the World," it cost $4 million to build and served as the nation’s premier movie palace for decades. Designed by the renowned architectural firm Rapp & Rapp, the theater is celebrated for its opulent French Baroque and Neo-Baroque styles. The exterior features a six-story triumphal arch motif inspired by the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, covered in off-white architectural terracotta. The Grand Lobby was modeled after the Royal Chapel at Versailles, it rises five stories and features a gallery promenade. The Grand Staircase was patterned after the Paris Opera House, leading to the various balcony levels. The Auditorium originally seated nearly 3,900 people (now roughly 3,600) and features 15 murals of Greek and Roman deities repainted for the 1933 World’s Fair. The vertical "CHICAGO" sign and horizontal marquee are among the most recognized emblems of the city. The original seven-ton steel sign was installed in 1921. It was replaced in 1996 by an exact aluminum replica to reduce structural strain; the original was donated to the Smithsonian Institution. The marquee features a red circle with a "Y" in the center, a municipal device representing the forking of the Chicago River at Wolf Point.

Please see our "Details" section for more information on the construction, and care of our table trays. In the potichomania process, the glass acts as both a foundation and protective finish, saving the step of varnishing. The original intent was to recreate Greek and Etruscan vases by simulating rare and expensive Sevrés porcelain.
