Ladies playing Sap-Ma

Ladies playing Sap-Ma

Our new Matriarchs collection is a dream come true for me. I've always wanted to honor the brave woman who came before me, and who forged previously unimagable paths for themselves and others. It is because of these fore-bearers that I am the woman I am today.

Chinese Ladies from the "Three-Straits" region playing Sap-Ma, circa, 1920. Photographer unknown.
Also known as Sup Mah, The concept of finger guessing is simple, but don’t underestimate its simplicity once you’ve had a few drinks. This one is for two players at a time. Both players extend any number of fingers on one or both hands, revealing their hands at the same time. Just before the reveal, one player must shout out a number between two and twenty. If the total number of fingers held up is equal to the sum guessed, that player is safe. If not, he or she must drink.

In the potichomania process, the glass acts as both a foundation and protective finish, saving the step of varnishing. The original intent was to recreate Greek and Etruscan vases by simulating rare and expensive Sevrés porcelain.

This tray measures approximately 5x8 inches. The relative thinness of the tray – just over 1/8” thick – belies the complexity of the potichomania process. Each of our trays is comprised of a glass tray, three layers of 28# paper, four coatings of varnish, and finished with two coats, each of paint and clear acrylic spray. We’ve added a high-quality felt pad on the bottom in order to protect your home surfaces.a

Care: Please spray with a gentle glass cleanser and wipe clean. Do not submerge in water. For decorative purposes only.
