The Rookery

$85.00Price

The Rookery Building, a designated National Historic Landmark, is a masterpiece of the Chicago School of architecture, known for its innovative blend of new building technologies and intricate ornamentation. The 1888 structure, designed by Daniel Burnham and John Wellborn Root, notably features a mix of Romanesque Revival, Queen Anne, Moorish, Byzantine, and Venetian motifs on its facade. The building showcases an important moment in architectural history by combining traditional exterior load-bearing masonry walls with an interior metal (cast and wrought iron) skeletal frame, a precursor to the modern steel skyscraper frame. Two prominent features are the ornate, semi-circular "oriel" staircase that winds through the building's light court and a unique grillage foundation—a reinforced concrete slab with crisscrossing iron rails—to support the massive structure on Chicago's swampy soil. Additionally, Root designed a two-story, sky-lit central light court to provide natural illumination and air circulation to inner offices, a revolutionary solution for the time.In 1905, Frank Lloyd Wright was commissioned to remodel the lobby and light court, adding his signature Prairie-style elements. He covered much of Root's elaborate wrought iron with white marble and added gilded accents, creating the stunning, light-filled atrium seen today.

The original intent was to recreate Greek and Etruscan vases by simulating rare and expensive Sevrés porcelain.
